4. How do you determine battery capacity? IN WATT-HOURS. Let’s compare the two: |
|
First, the 48 & 36 volt batteries have about the same amount of “fuel” or lead and weigh about the same. This “fuel” is just divided differently in the 48 volt battery. The 48 has four (4) smaller cells and the 36 has three (3) larger cells.
Battery energy storage capacity is measured in watt-hours. Watt-hours equals ampere hours multiplied by voltage. The ampere hour capacity is proportional to the amount of lead in each cell, while the battery voltage is proportional to the number of cells. The 36 has three cells in it. Each cell is capable of delivering 2200 ampere hours at two volts or 440 watt-hours per cell. 440 watt-hours x 3 = 1320 watt-hours.
The 48 volt battery has four cells in it. Each cell is capable of delivering 150 ampere hours at 2 volts or 300 watt-hours per cell. 300 watt-hours x 4 cells = 1200 watt hours. |

In addition, higher volts means lower amperage. Amperage, not voltage, is what determines torque performance and the 36v is clearly the leader. Safety is also important and the lower the voltage the better. Again, the E-Z-GO 36 volt system is the leader.
When determining electric car performance many things must be considered. Battery capacity is important, however, charging efficiency, motor and axle efficiency and speed control design also play an important part.
